You might be surprised to realize that your senior’s bedroom might not be as comfortable to her as it once was. It also might have more safety concerns than you or she might have noticed.
There Is No Clutter or Other Potential Tripping Hazards
One of the first things to do in your senior’s bedroom is to remove any and all tripping hazards that can be removed or adjusted. This means that clutter, cords, and even some furniture might need to be rearranged or even removed from the bedroom completely. When you’re tucking cords away, make sure that you don’t put any furniture directly on the cord, because that can cause damage.
Carpets, Rugs, and Flooring Are as Safe as Possible
Flooring and floor coverings can be some of the most important aspects of your senior’s bedroom when you’re looking at safety. Throw rugs, carpets that are coming loose, and anything else that can cause someone to slip or trip are all a problem. Go through your senior’s room and see if there’s anything that might catch her, causing her to slip, or otherwise presents a hazard.
Your Senior Can Control the Environment
It’s important that your elderly family member is able to adjust the environment in her room within reason. Including a ceiling fan, a dehumidifier, and easy access to lighting can all be vital in terms of helping her to get as comfortable as possible. Bonus points if she can access controls for all of these devices from the comfort of her bed.
Assistive Devices and Safety Tools Are Ready and Waiting
Assistive tools are often difficult enough to convince your senior to use regularly, especially inside her home. But if you make sure that she can easily access these tools when she needs them most, like when she’s getting out of bed, she’s more likely to go ahead and use them. It’s also a good idea to stock up her nightstand with other safety tools, such as a flashlight, a phone, and a list of emergency numbers. If there’s anything she might need in the middle of the night, like medication or a bottle of water, it’s a good idea to make sure it’s there each night.
If your senior is still having trouble sleeping through the night, having elderly care providers with her overnight might help. That way you can sleep soundly knowing that there’s someone there with her who can help her if she needs it.
